Merits of the Green Revolution
Green Revolution introduced a number of modern farming methods in India.
Higher yield due to the use of HYV seeds.
Machines like harvesters, tractors and threshers have made ploughing and harvesting faster and easier.
Higher yield enabled farmers to sell the surplus food in the market and earn more.
Pesticides and insecticides are able to protect the crops from pests and insects.
A good irrigation system is able to enhance crop production.
Demerits of the Green Revolution
Loss of soil fertility due to increased use of chemical fertilisers.
Continuous use of groundwater for tubewell irrigation has reduced the water table below the ground.
The chemical fertilisers, easily soluble in water, can dissolve in the groundwater and pollute it.
They can kill bacteria and other micro-organisms helpful for the soil.
Excessive use of fertilisers can also make the soil alkaline and unfit for cultivation.

Merits:
1) Green Revolution provides a large amount of yield from a small piece of land.
2) It enables us to make the maximum use of available minerals and nutrients in the soil.
3) With the growing population, it provides a solution to meet the growing needs of the people by increasing the amount of yield from the same piece of land.

Demerits:
1) The use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides etc. leads to the degradation of the natural structure of the soil.
2) The use of chemicals leads to the acidity or alkalinity of the soil, making it unsuitable for agriculture.
3) Higher rates of irrigation result in soil erosion as well as the reduction in water table below the land.
4) Over use of chemical fertilizers results in water pollution as the chemicals get washed away with the water and mix in the river thus polluting it.
