Two kingdom classification was given by Carolus von Linnaeus in 1758. He classified the living organism in to two parts plants and animals.

Merits of Linnaeus System of classification:

1). Unique name is assigned to each species which reduces the chance of confusion.

2). Plants and animals are classified based on specific characters.

Demerits:

1). The position of prokaryotes was ignored.

2) Some organisms like Euglena and slime molds have characters similar to plants and animals. Their position in living world was uncertain.

3). It does not consider molecular level of classification.
