Self Pollination
Merits:
● It helps plants to maintain their unique characteristics or attributes,
● ensures purity of breeds and species,
Demerits :
● lead to inbreeding depression,
● any disease or weakness in a progeny can continue to increase in the next progeny which may lead to complete destruction of the species.
Cross Pollination
Merits :
● Plants become genetically diverse
● no danger of inbreeding depression in cross pollinating plants
● disease resistance is higher as compared to self pollinating plants.
Demerits :
● doesn't maintain the purity of species and lead to genetic differences.
● plants are dependent upon the pollinating agents for pollination to be carried out.
