Merits and demerits of shell model
Answers
HOLA META,
Energies of nuclear states have been successfully calculated by using simple shell-model wave functions and effective two-body interactions whose matrix elements were extracted from experimental data in a consistent way. Straightforward application of the shell model to many heavy nuclei is out of the question since the orders of the interaction matrices to be diagonalized may reach 10 -14 or more. Truncation schemes based on physical arguments must be found, like generalized seniority for semi-magic nuclei. The use of effective interaction demonstrates the difference between shell-model wave functions and the real states of the nucleus. Various high-energy probes yield information about the latter and the necessary corrections to shell-model wave functions. In the analysis of these corrections, the success of the shell model must not be ignored. Corrections that contradict the very basis of the shell model, the strong spin-orbit interaction, are certainly not applicable.
