Translation- my grand parents died in an accident.

Why is 'morts' used here?

It is because the sentence has an indirect object. Un accident is placed after the preposition dans thus it is an indirect object. Whenever there's an indirect object and the sentence is in passé composé tense, we always put être as the auxiliary verb instead of avoir which is used which majority of French verbs in passé composé.
