Metabolic waste consists of substances that are left over from the process of metabolism and these include various salts, toxic substances and cellular waste products. Kidneys maintain the acid-base balance in the body by eliminating excess of Hydrogen ions from the body and reabsorbing the bicarbonate ions. Erythropoietin is produced when the level of oxygen is low in kidneys and is used to produce RBC in the bone marrow. Vitamin D is excreted in small quantities in urine. Kidneys lower or elevate the blood pressure by constricting of dilating the tubule of the nephron under the action of hypothalamus.
