Metal casting is a modern process. In this process, metal shapes are formed by pouring liquid metal into a mould
where it is cooled and extracted later from the mould. A solid metallic sphere of radius 8 cm is melted and recast
into eight equal solid spherical balls. Determine the diameter of the balls.

  • The radius given in the problem above for the solid metallic Sphere is=8 cm
  • We know the volume of a sphere is =V=4/3*π*(r Cube) = 4/3*π*r*r*r=4/3*π*8*8*8=2144.66 cube cm
  • Now the volume is divided into 8 equal spherical balls.
  • So the volume for each new spherical ball will be=2144.66/8=268 cube cm
  • No we know that V=4/3*π*(r Cube).
  • So 268= 4/3*π*(r Cube)
  • So radius r=4 cm
  • So diameter d=2*r=8 cm for each of the small spherical balls.
