Answer:

The original question referred only to cooking utensils, not pans. There are very different reasons why pans may have wood or plastic handles, but in reality they very seldom have such handles. It’s all about heat conduction, reliability and user comfort.

Cooking utensils are made of many different materials. And none of it matters. They are made of wood, plastic, stainless steel, aluminum, and bamboo. None of that matters. As long as the utensils can be adequately cleaned then there is no issue. Now plastic and stainless utensils will last longer (most people don’t properly maintain wood utensils.)

So what would happen if these utensils were made of iron? First of all, they would tend to rust. And they would also tend to be heavy. Finally, they would not do any better job than any other material.

In fact, the majority of kitchen utensils today are made of Plastic. That is Nylon or Silicone. That’s because there are so many non-stick pans that insist you use only plastic or wood utensils. That is to protect the plastic coatings on the pans from scratching or flaking.

Go to your nearest kitchen store and look what’s on the wall. Mostly plastic, wood or stainless utensils
