The metal object over which another metal Is to Be plated is fixed at the cathode.
The metal which is to be plated on the above metal is placed at anode

From anode, the metal ion that is to be plated over another metal, goes to the electrolytic solution and gets deposited at the cathode.

Eg, when you plate nickel over iron,
Nickel is placed at anode.
Iron is placed at cathode.
