Metal oxide are basic oxide.
take a magnesium ribbon and brunt it. when white powder type substance is formed. put it in a test tube, put clean water in it and test it water a red litmus paper. the litmus will turn blue indicating that metal oxide are basic .

To know this you need to do an easy expriment
1.)Take a magensium ribbon available in your school laboratory
2.)Cut required piece if ribbon about 5 to 6 cm
3.)Heat the magnesium ribbon with help of bunsen burner and don't forget to hold the ribbon in a pair of tongs.
4.)You will see that magnesium burns emitting heat and light
5.)When burning stops take the powdery Magnesium oxide in a dish
6.)Then you can use various indicators to taste the nature you will find that nature of oxides of metals are basic in nature
Chemical equation:-
2Mg + o2 ------> 2Mgo
