When metal reacts with oxygen they form metal oxide

Metal + Oxygen -> Metal oxides

Example :-

2Cu + O2 -> 3CuO

4Al + 3O2 -> 2Al2O3

2Mg + O2 -> 2MgO

Different metal show different reacticitvities when they react with oxygen

• Au and Ag does not reacts with oxygen.
• When copper is burned in the presence of air it form a black coating knwon as copper oxide.
• Sodium and Potassium react vigorously that they can catch fire therefore, they are kept immersed in kerosene.
• Mg, Al, Zn and Pb form thin layer of oxide to prevent them from oxidation.
• Iron does not burn easily on heating but iron filling burn vigorously.
