Answer:

Metals react with oxygen to form basic oxides. Metallic oxides are basic in nature because they react with dilute acids to form salt and water. They also react with water to form metal hydroxides which are alkaline in nature because these metal hydroxides release OH

ions in solution.

Metal react with oxygen to produce basic oxides and non metal react with oxygen to produce acidic oxides.

  • Metals and non metals, both react with oxygen, to produce different oxide compounds.
  • Now, the nature of the oxide produced in the chemical reaction between a metal and oxygen is basic.

Example :

A metal Mg (magnesium) and oxygen reacts with each other to produce MgO, which is a basic oxide.

2Mg + O ----> 2MgO

  • And, the nature of the oxide produced in the chemical reaction between a non metal and oxygen is acidic.

Example :

A non metal S (sulphur) and oxygen reacts with each other to produce SO2, which is a acidic oxide.

S + O ----> SO
