Explanation:

Reactivity of Metal Containers

When metal reacts with acid, salt and hydrogen gas are produced. This ultimately reduces the volume of the chemical being contained. As well as this, acid is a highly corrosive substance with the ability to eat away at most materials.

Metal stoppers are not used to store acids in the laboratory because

  • Acids are very corrosive. Generally, all acids have hydrogen in them. Based on the reactivity series it can be observed that most of the reactive elements lie on top of hydrogen in the reactivity series.
  • If any strong acid like HCl is kept in a metal container whose reactivity is greater than hydrogen, a chemical reaction will take place which would result in the formation of salt.
  • Hence, metal stoppers are not used to store acids. They are only stored in plastic bottles or metals having lower reactivity than Hydrogen.
