metals like potassium and sodium react violently with cold water in case of sodium and potassium the reaction is too violent and exothermic that the evolve hydrogen immediately catches fire.

Because magnesium was less reactive then more reactive metal like sodium and potassium.
Magnesium doesn't react with cold water but more reactive metal can.
(Because of at a much higher temperature)
