in the periodic table the metals is on the left and non metals are in right. so when we move from left to right in period,we proceed from metals to non metals i.e metallic chracter to non-metalic chracter. hence we know metals posses metallic chracter.so we see it is going decreases and non metallic chracter of non metals increses

we know that in period electrons were added in the shells but the shells remain same.metal have ability to loose electron.when electron are added in the size of atom goes decresed due to nuclear pull which ultimately made metals to difficult to loose electron.that's why the metallic chracter decreases

1) Metallic character is the tendency of an atom to lose electron.
2)in a period, electron are added to the same shell and hence these electron experience greater pull from the nucleus. As the result outermost shell comes closer to nucleus atomic size decreases.
3)thus it become difficult to remove an electron from the outermost shell of th atom. Hence metallic character goes on decreasing while going from left to right in a period.
