metals are electropositive as they loose electrons to attain stable electronic configuration and hence acquires a positive sign
nonmetals are electronegative as they gain electrons to attain stable electronic configuration and hence acquires a negative sign

Metals are the elements which lose one , two or three electrons to form cations.Their ionisation potential is very low and are electropositive elements.
Metals are malleable and ductile.
They are good conductor's of heat and electricity.ex. sodium potassium copper zinc, etc
Non metals are the substances which gain one two or three electrons to form anions. These are electronegative elements with high electron gain enthalpy. They are mostly bad conductor's of heat and electricity ( except graphite) and are brittle.ex.sulphur, carbon etc
