Metals are the elements which can form positive ions by the loss of electrons. The alkali metals (the IA elements) lose a single electron to form a cation with a 1+ charge. The alkaline earth metals (IIA elements) lose two electrons to form a 2+ cation.

It can be defined as metals are those elements which has tendency to loose electrons and form electropositive ions.

You can understand this as, in valence shell of atomic structure of metals there are 1or2or3 electrons thus it is easy to donate or loose electrons rather than to gain or accept electrons.

Hence metals loose electrons (electrons are negatively charged particles) and by loosing electrons it forms positive ions.
