Hi!
Metals have lustre. But they loose their shine. This is because of the action of air.
It is called corrosion. when this action is prolonged beyond tarnishing, corrosion happens. Compounds that form on the surface of the metal slowly eat it away.
so, the metals get rusted. But metals down the activity series retain their shine for a long time because they do not react with air easily. example, iron.
Thank You.

Hey there!
Metals are lustrous in nature but they often loose their shine. It is due to the air and moisture present in our atmosphere.
Because of air some metals react with oxygen and form oxides. Due to this the meatals apperance becomes dull and they loose their shine.
For example:
The iron when reacts with air(air have hydrogen sulphide) get oxidized into rust. This makes the apperance to iron dull.
