Metaphase is a stage in eukaryotic cell division in which the chromosomes align on the metaphase plate in the middle of the cell. ... In those stages of cell division, the chromosomes are condensed, the spindle fibers form, and the nuclear envelope is broken down.

Answer :-

Metaphase :-

  • During metaphase, chromosomes undergo maximum condensation and occupy the centre of the cell, forming an equatorial plate.

  • During metaphase, chromosomes undergo orientations at the equatorial plate.

  • The chromosomes are most distinctly visible and can be counted during the metaphase.

  • The centromeres of chromosomes are attached to the spindle fibers.

  • The metaphase is the best stage to observe the shape, size and number of chromosomes.

  • The chief function of the centromere, refers to the movement of the chromosomes.

  • Movement of the chromosomes on the mitotic spindle is dependent on the association of the spindle fibre with the centromere (Kinetochore).

  • During metaphase, the fibres of the spindle apparatus, are constructed using "Microtubules" of the following 3 types- (i) Kinetochore microtubules, (ii) Polar microtubules, (iii) Aster microtubules.
