Answer :-

Metaphase :-

  • During metaphase, chromosomes undergo maximum condensation and occupy the centre of the cell, forming an equatorial plate.

  • During metaphase, chromosomes undergo orientations at the equatorial plate.

  • The chromosomes are most distinctly visible and can be counted during the metaphase.

  • The centromeres of chromosomes are attached to the spindle fibers.

  • The metaphase is the best stage to observe the shape, size and number of chromosomes.

  • The chief function of the centromere, refers to the movement of the chromosomes.

  • Movement of the chromosomes on the mitotic spindle is dependent on the association of the spindle fibre with the centromere (Kinetochore).

  • During metaphase, the fibres of the spindle apparatus, are constructed using "Microtubules" of the following 3 types- (i) Kinetochore microtubules, (ii) Polar microtubules, (iii) Aster microtubules.
