Answer:
Steps to convert Methanol to propanol
The conversion of methanol to propanol occurs through the following three steps:
1. Oxidation:
Methanol is passed over the heated copper. Due to this, oxidation occurs through which 2 atoms of hydrogen from methanol gets eliminated.
This leads to the formation of Methanal.
2. Reaction with Grignard reagent:
As methanal is an aldehyde it reacts with Grignard reagent and yields adduct through nucleophilic attack of Grignard reagent to the carbonyl group.
3. Hydrolysis of the adduct
The hydrolysis of adduct with water leads to the formation of propanol.
The chemical equation involved in the reaction is given in the attachment.
