Electro refining is the process used to refine copper metal. A pure copper strip is used as a cathode whereas, block of crude metal is used as the anode and copper sulphate is used as the electrolyte.

  • In electrorefining step, impurities like Fe, Ni, Zn get dissolved in the solution while Au, Ag and Pt are deposited as anode mud below the anode and 100% copper is obtained from crude copper.

  • Copper is refined using an electrolytic method. Anodes are of impure copper and pure copper strips ar taken as cathode.

  • The electrolyte is acidified solution of copper sulphate and the net result of electrolysis is the transfer of copper in pure form from the anode to the cathode.

Anode: Cu → Cu2+ + 2 e–

Cathode: Cu2+ + 2e– → Cu
