Special cells called guard cells control each pore's opening or closing. When stomata are open, transpiration rates increase; when they are closed, transpiration rates decrease. POP-UP – Stomata are the only way plants can control transpiration rates in the short-term.

The rate of transpiration is controlled by stomatal aperture, and these small pores open especially for photosynthesis. While there are exceptions to this (such as night or CAM photosynthesis), in general a light supply will encourage open stomata.
