Methyl amine can be obtained from N-methyl phthalimide on treatment with Aqueous NaOH (or we can say by hydrolysis).

- Hydrolysis or Hydrazinolysis of N- alkyl phthalimide yields a primary alkyl amine.

- So when we react N- methyl phthalimide with aqueous NaOH, then we will get methyl amine.

C₆H₄(CO)₂N-R + 2 NaOH (aq) ---> C₆H₄(COONa)₂ + R-NH₂

- This reaction is the last step in Gabriel Synthesis reaction.
