In many ways, pollution and population especially in metropolitan cities are interrelated in a wide variety of ways.

  • First, the higher the population, the higher the burden of metropolitan cities to accommodate people. This is due to metropolitan cities being seen as hubs for employment and a sign of a better lifestyle. What ends up happening is that we get an increase in slums and bad living conditions which in turn lead to pollution.
  • An increase in population will also lead to an increase in pollution in many ways. Each person will produce a certain amount of waste per year and when there is overpopulation the cities are left with the burden of disposing of this waste. Hence we get pollution in waterways, airways, noise pollution, and so much more.
  • Finally, with the increase in pollution, the demand for products also increases, hence factories will need to continuously push out products to meet demand. However, what ends up happening is that there is an intense build-up of waste and pollution takes place because of this.
