valency if Mg is 2 and that of O is also 2 so as we know that on reacting the valency of chemicals gets interchanged so it will become Mg2O2 and we can take 2 common so it will be MgO

in case u want to know why O2 is given here it is because we cannot take nascent oxygen in free state oxygen occurs as O2 only u cannot write nascent O.
