Mg2+ ion is smaller than O2- ion although both have same electronic configuration why?

Mg2+ ion is smaller than O2- ion because in mg2+ ion the no. of proton is larger than O2- although both have same no of electron . the attraction between proton and electron is so high in mg2+ ion
