Formula of oxide is MgO, because oxidation state of Mg in MgCO3 is +2.

The oxide of Magnesium is given as follows:

Magnesium is a metal in the group  2 .

Magnesium reacts by losing 2 electrons.

Oxygen reacts by gaining two electrons.

Oxygen is in the group 6 of the elements in the periodic tables.

The oxide is thus given by :

When we heat Magnesium carbonate we get Magnesium oxide and Carbon (iv) oxide.
