MgSO4 reacts with NH4OH to form white coloured Mg(OH) precipitate.

  • The reaction between magnesium sulphate and ammonium hydroxide is a double displacement where the magnesium forms an ionic bond with hydroxide ion (OH-) to form insoluble precipitate.
  • With ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), double displacement again leads to formation of magnesium chloride (MgCl2) which is a soluble salt.
  • Hence, MgSO4 forms precipitate with NH4OH but not with NH4Cl.
