Let x unit gas bought on @ $2.39 so cost = 2.39x
And x-3 unit has bought @2.49 so costs = (x-3) 2.49
Total spent on gas = $46.21
So 2.39x+ 2.49x-7.47 = 46.21
4.88x= 46.21+ 7.47
= 53.68
X= 53.68/4.88 =11
Thus he bought a total of 11+8 = 19 gallons gas
And x-3 unit has bought @2.49 so costs = (x-3) 2.49
Total spent on gas = $46.21
So 2.39x+ 2.49x-7.47 = 46.21
4.88x= 46.21+ 7.47
= 53.68
X= 53.68/4.88 =11
Thus he bought a total of 11+8 = 19 gallons gas
