Michael is thinking about signing up for his first marathon. So far, his longest run has only been 10 miles. Should he use the regression equation to predict how many calories he would burn if he runs a marathon (26.2 miles)? Explain.

y_{i}= f(x_{i},\beta ) + e_{i}  is the formula of the regression equation, where:-

y_{i} =  dependent variable

f = function

x_{i} =  independent variable

\beta = unknown parameters

e_i = error terms

In this case, we are not sure we have an independent variable or not because when running a marathon the diet of the participant is closely monitored and the calories that will be consumed will not be independent of the number of miles and hence the number of calories burnt cannot be calculated using the regression formula.
