Direct and Indirect Speech in the English Language
- We use Direct speech when we simply repeat what someone said word to word just like in the question statement. Speech marks are used in direct speech to enclose the reported words.
- For example, Rahul said to me, "I am going to London."
- We use Indirect speech when we do not repeat what someone said word to word. We do keep the context the same but our words can be different. Speech marks are not used in indirect speech.
- For example, Rahul told me that he was going to London.
