Michelle and Audrey both start walking at noon. Michelle walks from P to Q, back to P and back and forth at a constant speed of 3 m.p.h. Audrey walks from Q to P, back to Q and back and forth at a constant speed of 2 m.p.h. They pass each other for the first time at 1 P.M., 3 miles from P and 2 miles from Q. At what time will they pass each other for the second time?

Answer:

In an hour Ann walked 3 miles. So when John started to walk the distance between the two was 15 miles. Add their respective rates together (3mph + 2mph = 5mph) and calculate how long it took them to cover the 15 miles at that combined rate (15miles/5mph = 3hrs)

So in 3 hours Ann walks 3mph*3hrs = 9miles. Last step is to add in the initial 3 miles she walked before John started.

9+3=12miles
