Some microorganisms are useful to us whereas some are harmful.

Useful microorganisms :

• Lactobacilli a type of bacteria , which multiply and turn milk into curd.
• Yeast a type of fungi has been used for thousands of years to make bread. Yeast is also used for commercial production of alcohol and wine by the process of fermentation.
• Some bacteria and fungi are used to prepare antibiotics. The fungus Penicillium is used to make penicillin, a drug used to treat a number of infections.

Harmful microorganisms :

• Communicable diseases such as dysentery, tuberculosis, typhoid and cholera are caused by bacteria.
• The most harmful diseases such as polio , Ebola, influenza, dengue,chikungunya , rabies and AIDS are caused by certain viruses.
