The middle course :- When the river reaches the plains, a number of tributaries join it and so the the volume of water increases greatly. However, it flows less swiftly than in the upper course as it flows less swiftly than in the upper course as it flows over land that has less gradient.
The river erosion is more lateral than vertical. Hence there is a widening of the valley in the middle stage of the river.
