Given

f(x) = 2x² - 3x - 2

Steps for splitting the term

  • Multiply the coefficient of x² and the constant term. Here (2 × -2) = -4
  • Now, split the middle term into two terms such that: ➪ On multiplying the terms we get (-4) ➪ On adding or subtracting the terms, we should get the middle term i.e (-3).. Here {(-4 + 1) = (-3)} Or {(1 - 4) = (-3)}

Solution

2x² - 3x - 2 = 0

=> 2x² - 4x + x - 2 = 0

Taking common

=> 2x(x - 2) + 1(x - 2) = 0

=> (2x + 1) (x - 2) = 0

=> 2x = -1 ; x = 2

=> x = -1/2 ; x = 2

Or

2x² - 3x - 2 = 0

=> 2x² + x - 4x - 2 = 0

Taking common

=> x(2x + 1) - 2(2x + 1) = 0

=> (2x + 1) (x - 2) = 0

=> 2x = -1 ; x = 2

=> x = -1/2 ; x = 2

The roots of the quadratic equation are (-1/2) and 2 respectively
