Here's your answer...
We can see in the diagram that there are 9 tunnels, 5 cubes long. So that would be 45 cubes.
However, these tunnels also intersect each other at 3 points. Since these three cubes are counted thrice, we will subtract them twice.
So no. of cubes not used = 45-3-3 = 39
So D is the right answer.
