Mike made a fruit basket. Of a total fruit, 5 were apples, 5/8 were bananas and 1/4 were oranges. How many pieces of fruit does mike have in his basket.
Answers
Given:
(i) In Mike's basket there were 5 apples.
(ii) 5/8 of the total fruits were bananas and 1/4 th were oranges.
To find:
(i) Total number of fruits
Solution:
Let the total number of fruits be x.
As 5/8th of the total are bananas and 1/4 th are oranges.
So, the fraction of the total which are bananas and oranges are:
5/8 + 1/4
= 7/8
Rest part = 1 - (7/8)
= 1/8
So, 1/8th of total fruits are apples.
Thus x/8 = 5 [Number of apples are 5}
⇒ x = (5*8)
⇒ x = 40
Mike has 40 fruits in his basket.
Given :
The number of Apples in basket = a = 5
The number of banana in basket = b = of total
The number of orange in basket = o = of total
To Find :
The number of pieces of fruit does mike have in his basket
Solution :
let The total number of fruits in basket = n
So, number of banana in basket = × n
And number of orange in basket = × n
So, Total number of fruits = apple + banana + orange
Or, n = 5 + × n + × n
Or, n = 5 +
Or, n = 5 +
Or, n - = 5
Or, = 5
∴ n = 5 ×8
i.e n = 40
