More Information:-

When we use the exact words of the speaker to to report what he/she said, we use the direct speech.

- He said, 'I play football.'

  • The reporting verb is followed by a comma.
  • The words of the speaker are written within inverted commas ('....')
  • The first word of the inverted comma starts with a capital letter.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When we use our own words to report what a person has said, we use the indirect speech. It is also called reported speech.

- He said that he plays football.

⠀⠀⠀

Change Direct to Indirect speech:-

  • The reporting verb is followed by that.
  • Remove the inverted commas ('...')
  • The reporting verb is changed in such a way that its pronouns and tenses are suitable for the reporter.
  • Change the verb in past tense. (said, thought, told)
