Unlike most Americans, I didn’t play Mega Millions yesterday. The odds of winning were 1 in 259 million. Statistically, I had a 1,000 times better chance of being killed by an asteroid or comet than winning – and let’s face it, my lucks run more to the “hit by a comet” kind than winning the lottery anyway.

That didn’t stop millions of Americans from buying tickets. The lure? The December 17, 2013, payout worth more than $645 million was the second largest jackpot in history. The winning numbers (8, 14, 17, 20, 39 – and Megaball 7) matched two tickets sold, one in San Jose, California, and one in Atlanta, Georgia
