India is fortunate to have fairly rich and varied mineral resources , but these resources are unevenly distributed . The distribution of minerals in India are : -
1- PENINSULAR PLATEAU -- Peninsular rocks contain most of the reserves of coal , metallic minerals , mica and many other non-metallic minerals , It also has reserves of non - ferrous minerals .
2- GUJARAT AND ASSAM -- Sedimentary rocks on the Western and Eastern flanks of the Peninsula  in Gujarat and Assam have most of the petroleum deposits .
3- RAJASTHAN -- It has reserves of many non - ferrous minerals .
4- NORTHERN PLAINS -- There is very little or no Economic minerals in vast alluvial parts of North India .
These variations exist largely because of the differences in the geological structures , processes and time involved in the formation of minerals .
