Miss Margaret Howe's special living room is full of water. The water is not very deep;
only up to her knees. Miss Howe is living in this specially built house with Peter and Parn,
her two friends. Miss Howe wades about in the water but Peter and Pain have to swim
around.
Peter and Pam are dolphins!
Peter and Parn are Miss Howe's students. Miss Howe has spent many months trying to
teach Peter and Parn to speak like human beings. By now, they can say simple words like
hello' and 'ball' by iritating Miss Howe.
Dolphins make many different sounds underwater. Not only do dolphins have their
own sounds, but they can also imitate just about any sounds- fish, motors and humans.
Miss Howe, along with a man named Dr. Lily, has been trying to prove that when dolphins
make some of their sounds, they are talking amongst themselves, communicating with each
other.
This is just possible, because dolphins have brains bigger than ours and almost as
complicated. Dolphins are extremely intelligent creatures.
In an effort to prove their theory, Miss Howe gives Peter and Pam lessons all day,
teaching them words and numbers. What Peter and Parn love most, though, is to play
games. Miss Howe plays garnes like catch and tag with them. She also tries to help them
understand how we think and why we do many of the things we do.
If dolphins and people could learn to talk to each other and to understand each
other, dolphins might be able to tell us many secrets of the underwater world.
(a) What things did Miss Howe and the dolphins do together? 1
(b) What were Miss Howe and Dr. Lily trying to prove? 1
(c) How can dolphins help us if we learn each other's language? 1
(d) Find a word each from the passage which is the opposite of the following:
i. Enemies
ii. Simple
