Miss Anne Mansfield Sullivan had the greatest influence on the

life, character and achievements of Helen Keller. She gave a new direction,

meaning and purpose to Helen’s dark life. Miss Sullivan inherited all those

traits and characteristics that go in making a perfect teacher. She was a

picture of tireless patience and unending devotion. It was her constant

encouragement, help and guidance that made Helen Keller first deaf and blind in

the world to earn a bachelor degree.

It was Graham Bell who

advised the parents of Helen Keller to contact the Perkins Institute for the

Blind. The director, Mr. Anagnos asked a former student Miss Anne Sullivan to

become Keller’s instructor. Miss Sullivan was herself a visually impaired 20

years old lady. It was the beginning of a 49-year-long relationship. The

relationship evolved into Miss Sullivan becoming Helen’s governess and then

eventual companion. Anne Sullivan arrived at Keller’s house in March 1887. She

immediately began to teach Helen to communicate by spelling words into her

hand, beginning with ‘‘ d-o-l-l’’ for the doll. It was Miss Sullivan who

unfolded and developed Helen’s skills and possibilities. It was Sullivan’s

genius as a teacher, her sympathy and loving tact which made learning so

beautiful and interesting for Keller. She felt that her being was inseparable

from her student. All that was best in Helen Keller had been awakened by the

loving touch of Miss Sullivan. Anne Sullivan stayed as a companion to Helen

Keller long after she taught her. Anne Sullivan married John Macy in 1905. She

remained a constant companion to Keller till she died in 1936.

Miss Sullivan was an ideal teacher. She was a constant guider and like an angel of helen keller. she supported helen in every possible way. anne was always there for her in her ups and downs as her constant companion.it was only due to anne's patience, support, and a loving attitude that helen learned from her life itself. anne's perseverance nature and motivation to helen keller worked like wonders for helen.she was always a helping hand to helen keller. she played a big role in helen's education and it was all due to  her meticulous nature that helen could get education.

In her novel 'The Story of My Life', Helen Keller pays

repeated homage to her great teacher, Miss Sullivan.  The world is full of

ordinary teachers who just teach shallowly. Miss Sullivan touched the depths of

Helen's soul and brought light to her darkened world.

The day she arrived at Helen's house, Helen called that day the most important

day of her life. Helen compared the arrival of her teacher to the shining of

'light of love' in her darkened life. Miss Sullivan took unprecedented pains to

teach Helen manual alphabet. Since Helen was suffering from hearing as well as

visual disabilities, Miss Sullivan really had to work very hard to teach Helen

the alphabet. In the 7 chapter, Helen praises Miss Sullivan in the following

words: "Thus I learned from life itself. At the beginning I was only a

mass of possibilities. It was my teacher who unfolded and developed them. When

she came, everything about me breathed of love and joy and was full of

meaning." It was Miss Sullivan's genius, her sympathy, her loving tact and

expert teaching skills which made the first years of Helen's education so

beautiful. Miss Sullivan made learning easy and fun-filled for Helen.

Miss Sullivan deserves all the praise she received from Helen. She taught her

with immense patience and love. She endured her initial stubbornness to her

methodology. She devised unique and innovative methods to teach Helen the

secrets of language, reading, speaking, imagination, and other mysteries of

life. She was always there with her in her ups and downs. Even during the

painful incident of Frost King, Miss Sullivan was always with her giving her

comfort, solace, and self confidence. Even while travelling to various places

such as World Fair, Fern Quarry, etc, Miss Sullivan was always with her. No

doubt, Helen considered her teacher as her own inseparable part! She was

everything to Helen!!

hope this helps you!!!
