john hallock should have explained all the situation and things to his wife lavinia so as to avoide all the misunderstanding. he already knew that she didn't like presence of any other lady in john's life, he should have explained all the things like that if meeting with ghost beforehand.

It is a well known fact that misunderstandings will usually break relationships. When Hallock view the ghost first, his initial concern seems to be his wife who he had considered would not able to view this fact.
He must have been completely frank with her and reveal her all that happened starting from the beginning.
This would have made his wife to trust him and eliminate the misunderstanding from their life.
