Mitochondria are also known as "Powerhouse of the cell"

⠀⠀⠀It is so called because, it generates ATP(Adenosine Triphosphate), which is the "energy currency of the cell".

✍️ Some more info :

Starting with the basics, "mitochondria" are one of the cell organelles.

  • Singular - Mitochondrian
  • Plural - Mitochondria

As we now know, they are called as "Powerhouse of the cell" because they are the sites for ATP generation.

Like plastids, they too have there own DNA and proteins. Hence, they are also called "semiautonomous organelles".

Stucture :-

Talking about their structure, firstly, they are double-membrane bounded.

The outer membrane is porous while, the inner membrane is deeply folded into cristae(foldings).

Folds of the inner membrane provides greater surface area for ATP generation.

The region enclosed by the inner membrane is called "matrix".

Function :-

Mitochondria are the sites of cellular respiration.

During respiration, oxidation of food releases energy in the form of ATP.

The body uses energy stored in ATP for making new chemical compounds and for mechanical work.

And that's the ultimate reason, why mitochondria are known as "powerhouse of the cell"
