Answer :
Mitochondria - Powerhouse of cell.
Mitochondria are found in both animal and plant cells. A mitochondria is a two-walled structure like a thermos. The outer mitochondrial membrane is smooth. The inner membrane is folded into finger-like projections called cristae. Both cristae and inner membrane have stalked F1 particles for generation of energy in the form of ATP ( adenosine triphosphate).
The space within mitochondria is called inner mitochondrial chamber. The gel-like proteinaceous substance that fills the space is called matrix. It contains respiratory enzymes, necessary for oxidation of glucose and release of energy in the form of ATP.Mitochondria have their own genetic system (DNA,RNA) which is different from the nuclear genetic material of the cell. They can replicate on their own. Therefore they are called semi-autonomous organelles. Mitochondria provide energy for various metabolic functions of cell. For this very reason, these are called powerhouse of cell.
