In the MKS system of units, mass would be in kilograms, velocity would be in meters per second, and the units on momentum would be the product of the two, i.e. kg. m/s. The cgs convention instead uses centimeters, grams, and seconds as its "base" units. In the cgs system, the units on momentum would be g.cm/s.
