Tansen was the greatest musician of his age. He was one of the nine gems in the court of Akbar. Every body who heard him singing was spellbound. When Tansen was in the court of Akbar, he Started to compose new Ragas or melodies based on classical Indian music. Tansen had a friendship with the great poet Surdasa and used to sing his bhajans or devotional songs. It is said that after joining the court of Akbar, Tansen became arrogant. He was; however, defeated in a rnusic contest by Baiju Bavara, another legendary Indian musician. This music contest is believed to have taken place in Agra. This defeat turned Tansen into a devotee of Lord Krishna. Besides being a great musician, Tansen was also a poet who composed many couplets. Akbar, the Emperor of India was inspired by Tansen to go to meet Surdasa, Meera and Haridasa.Tansen, the legendary musician, was born in Gwalior in 1506. He was born in a Brahmin family but it is said that later he was converted to Islam. Up to the age of 5, Tansen did not show any musical talent but when he became a disciple of the great music teacher Gutu Hari Dasa, who trained him in different aspects of music, the hidden talent of Tansen came to surface. Soon, Tansen began to be known far and wide as an incomparable singer. Akbar, being a good connoiseur of art, recognized the high merit of Tansen as a musician and honoured him by giving a place in the nine gems in his court. Tansen died in 1589 and he was buried near Gwalior at Behat, his native place. His tomb can still be seen here.A national musical festival is still held every year in December, near the tomb of Tansen at Behat as a mark of respect to his memory.
