Poem :- My mother at sixty six
Question:
Imagine yourself to be the mother of the poet and you came to know about all the feelings of the poet about you. Write a letter to your daughter in 150 - 200 words telling her not to dwell on the fears.
Letter starting :-
I am writing to you because when you left me at the airport, I felt something was not right. Judging by how little you spoke that day...

As a child, the poet had the fear of losing her mother. She calls it an old familiar ache because now, after several years, she feels the same way. She recollects the childhood fear of getting separated from her mother. This fear is due to the old age of her mother. Kamala Das hides her feeling by smiling at her mother
. The pain that Kamala Das feels is the pain of being separated from her mother. As her mother is ageing, Kamala fears that her mother will die soon. She does not want to lose her and so, is pained at the thought.
. The poet is sad and anxious. She is pained at the thought that her mother is getting old. Despite this, she smiles in order to make her mother feel happy. She hides her feelings so that her mother does not feel sad.
. Kamala Das looks out of the moving car to put away the thoughts of her aging mother. She sees the trees which seem to be running. She also sees the happy children who are running out of their homes into the garden.
.The late winter’s moon is weak and pale. Unlike its usual appearance, the moon in late winters lacks strength and shine. Similarly, the poet’s mother looked pale and weak. She was old and had lost her charm and beauty. Thus, she has been compared to the late winter’s moon.
. The poet says that the colour of her mother’s face was like the colour of ash. While asleep, she appeared similar to a dead body. Her appearance has been compared to that of the late winter’s moon. She was colourless and pale just like the late winter’s moon which lacks shine and strength.
