British Indian States:
• British Indian States were the Indian states which are under the direct control of British.
• The Britishers divided these states into Provinces for easy administration.
• These provinces were once part of Presidency which later broke up into many provinces.
• Madras, Bombay, Calcutta were town presidencies under East India company.
• The head of a province was a Governor appointed by Vice roy of India.
• There were eight major provinces during the rule of British.
• Some of the them were Central province, United Province, North West Frontier province etc.
Princely States:
• Princely states were the Indian states which were under the control of native kings.
• But these were in Subsidary Alliance with the Britishers.
• These princely states had to pay the taxes for the Britishers.
• During the independence, there were more than 575 princely states in India.
• Some of the Princely states were Hyderabad, Junagadh, Travoncore etc...
• After the partition of India, these princely states were given right to join either India or Pakistan.
• However, most of the princely states joined Indian union.
